Trying to stay alive…

When everyone was claiming that hip-hop was dead, or dying, on life support or suffering in some way about three years ago I was watching R&B slip away. What happened in R&B that took the soul out the beat? It was as if the pop explosion of the late 90’s rolled over and began to suck in the R&B artist… there just seemed to be a lack of soul, passion, love songs, ballads, and real singers (I mean people that can BLOW not Ciara or Chris Brown). I love Christina Aguilera but it struck me as odd that “Back to Basics” was one of the best R&B albums of 2006 (no knock though, it was an amazing album). Do not get me wrong there are artists who hold strong to their R&B roots but little attention or not enough exposure until they come out with “cross-over” or pop hit. Now let’s say you’re thinking about the question that I’m posing regarding the state of R&B and you don’t agree that Chrisette Michele, Ryan Leslie, Melonie Fiona, Solange Knowles, Robin Thicke, Ne-Yo, Trey Songz, Jennifer Husdon and a few other relatively new comers are reviving a genre that fell upon hard times… then tell me who was holding it down for R&B in let’s 2006 and the three preceeding years.

I’m happy to say that R&B is coming back and Alicia Keys, John Legend, and Musiq aren’t the only ones making love songs nowadays. Amongst the mundaness that has taken over the artist in the industry today I’m realizing that the new trend is to be different which unfurtunately results in everyone being the same… There are a lot of new talents coming up and I’m hoping that ten years from now I’ll still be excited about the music industry as I am now.

BUT for the time being I’ll put up a few new R&B songs I heard today.

Ryan Leslie – You’re Not My Girl

Melonie Fiona – You Stop My Heart

Melonie Fiona – Walk On By

Melonie Fiona – Magic

Mario – More Than Friends

R.I.P. Auto-tune

There is no need for an over the top video analysis. The title of the track speaks for itself… D.O.A. or Death of Auto-tune has had a long time coming and I must say that it is right on time. It would take Jay-Z to call out the industry on their bullshit fad chasing, which has ultimately led to a complete lack of creativity in the music and fashion… in the whole lifestyle for that matter. Here is the video on which Jay-Z blows up that wack ass gold champagne, ridiculously tacky jewelery, boarder line tacky clothing, and the auto-tune device amongst other “thriving” fads.

There is only 1 KING!!!!!!!!

They say you never know what you got til its gone and that’s how feel about the passing of the great Michael Jackson. I never knew I could be so emotionally connected to someone I neither met nor knew personally. The passing of Michael Jackson was a hard pill for me to swallow and something I truly did not want to believe. i must admit that I’ve done my fare share of shit talking about Mike the past couple years BUT one thing that can NEVER be questioned is his impact not only on music but on our lives. Michael Jackson did not simply influence pop culture; he was and for ever will BE pop culture. The music was more than amazing and timeless; it is the best we’ve ever heard. There is no other person to ever set the records, break the barriers, blur the lines that divides us all… or touch people the way Michael Jackson did.

I always wished that I had been born in the early 80’s so I could have had the pleasure of seeing Michael Jackson during the best times of his career… just imagine hearing “Off The Wall” when it was first released and “Thriller” would have been the end all be all for me. But I do have a favorite moment from Michael Jackson and it happens to be one I’ve only seen playbacks of. The 1983 Motown 25 Celebration was the event and “Billie Jean” was the song. During the performance MJ showed the MoonWalk to the world for the first time and the crowd roars… I love this performance and always tried to mimic it when listening to Bille Jean. And below I added one of my favorite vids from the King although there are so many… What’s your favorite Michael Jackson memory?

Are You Hip-Hop?

What is Hip-Hop and is there special criterion that makes something or someone Hip-Hop?

When someone asks: “What is Hip-Hop?”  I say that “I am Hip-Hop.” Hip-Hop has always been more than music; its always been about the culture and lifestyle. Whether people were breaking in the park, tagging up the neighborhood, creating and rocking the freshest styles, or just killing the cypher; Hip-Hop has always been a way of life. So, what is Hip-Hop? Continue reading ‘Are You Hip-Hop?’

Heavy Rotation…?

paul_wallIt’s been a while since I’ve shown love to my folks down south so this is way overdue. Reported track from Paul Wall’s forthcoming album Fast Lane (Asylum) features Diddy’s boyz Yung Joc and Gorilla Zoe. “I’m so high I believe I can fly!” That’s how I feel right now (no illegal substance involved) so it’s rocking in my headphones…

gucci_maneI don’t usually rocks with Gucci Mane (AT ALL and this is exactly why) BUT on his latest “Wasted” featuring Plies (the one I hate to admit I like) he accomplishes what seems to be the norm these days. It’s hook is catchy and the lyrics aren’t memorable in the least bit… BUT it will soon be on a radio near you…

mosdefMos Def covers one of my favorite tracks from 808’s & Heartbreak, “Say You Will” and I must say that I Effin Love It!!!! The live band and the lack of autotune does the song much justice… gives it a very jazzy feel and lessens the dark mood that Kanye set with the original.

eminem3amAfter a few disappointing leaks from his upcoming album Relapse (May 2009) Eminem gives us “3AM”which reminds why we all love Em even when we don’t want to. I’ll call this a lyrical exercise at its best.

The Art of Freestyling…

I’m going to start by stating that in the last five months there is NO RAPPER I have listened to more than Drake. With that said, I was in the car with my homies Ani and Christine when we heard Drake “freestyling” on Hot97. Now being that the three of us are real hip-hop fans we were all ears and gave Drake is props for freestyling live on the air. I actually made the statement: “That’s why I fucks with Drake; everybody be spitting written rhymes calling them freestyles but my man went in on Flex.” Yup, that’s what I said. Little did I know that less than a week later the video would come out showing Drake reading the lyrics from his Black Berry. I’m I shocked? Hell no! I won’t even say that I am disappointed because some just aren’t good with freestyles and at the end of the day this doesn’t take any credibility as an emcee from Drake… his is still ill in my eyes BUT I just would like to know: What happened to the art of FREESTYLIN?!?!?!

This is new G.O.O.D. Music artist Big Sean rhyming backstage of the G.O.O.D. Music set at SxSW 2009. I’m feeling his rhyme no doubt but I question whether or not it was straight off the top because it sounds as if its from a song he already has.

Here’s that ni**a named LUDA!!!!!! Now this is what I am talking about right here.  Freestyling! Luda even refers to things inside the booth throughout his rhyme which gives more credibility to this being off the top. And let’s not forget that Big Tigger was always giving you it straight off the top… That’s classic right there.

Okay folks… I’m going to end this post with that OH SO CLASSIC NOTORIOUS B.I.G. serving wack emcees on the corner. I love this man… I wish I could walk down the street and here some ppl rhyming like this; I don’t want to hear none of that Smack DVD stuff either. I’m talking about emcees outside doing what emcees do. RIP B.I.G.

Best Era of Music…

What’s your favorite era of music? Regardless of the genre what decade or period of time had the best music in your opinion?

See I was made in the 80’s but I was raised in the 90’s and my favorite music shows that all too well. I love the 80’s (one word: PRINCE); one love: Hip-Hop but at the end of the day I cannot escape the heat that was the music of the 90’s. The 90’s had the most original, versatile, diverse, and freshest Hip-Hop ever. You could go from Wu to NWA to OutKast to Naughty by Nature the Tribe then from Pac to Big to LL to Jay to DMX to Kim to Fox to Queen to Dre to Snoop to Cube to Mase to Pun to Red & Meth even Uncle Luke lol… Can you say New Jack Swing (damn)… How about the R&B groups of the 90’s, it was like 50 of them and I won’t attempt to name them all b/c u already know… and the R&B was hot: the pen of Babyface and the voices of Mariah and Whitney… Oh and we cannot forget about the Pop explosion that happened… The Spice Girls even got it poppin in my neighborhood and there was no doubt that No Doubt was sick… Now I could go on but I think ya’ll get the picture… I just wish I was a kid again…
