Mixtape Crazy

Other than Chrisette Michele and Jadakiss’ latest album there isn’t any LP I’ve checked out lately. For the most part I’ve been listening to mix-tapes (because the radio is inconsistent and unreliable). Some are new and some are old; some are fresh in the game and some been doing it for years; some are big names and some may remain nameless in your book… I’m going to post the link and a track or two from each one nonetheless.

Asher Roth – Asleep in the Bread Aisle

asher-roth1

As far as comparisons to Eminem; their voices and complexions are as far as it goes. He has been featured on multiple Gangsta Grillz Mixtapes but “Asleep in the Bread Aisle” is Roth’s first major label release (Motown).  Asher Roth is not a gimmick and don’t figure him lame because of songs like “I Love College.” He is college educated and anyone that has been to college knows the track is as real as it get. He starts the album off by exercising his lyrical ability on “Lark on My Go-Kart.” Now some of the chorus’ could be better but just when you are ready to write him off as mediocre he hits you with the second verse of “La Di Da” and “Sour Patch Kids” which makes you wonder how the hell did he piece those lyrics together so effortlessly.

The decision to have features on the first album is always a tricky one; established artist give you support and the endorsement fickle fans may need but they also have the ability to overshadow you on your own track without even trying. Asher split the difference; on “Be by Myself” I was listening to Cee-Lo, Keri Hilson should have just left “She Don’t Want a Man” alone (Period!), “As I Em” is good and Chester French compliments the song/album well, as well as New Age, Busta and a few other features.

So… Asleep in the Bread Aisle doesn’t give you much time to doze off  (especially once you hear “Lion’s Roar”… My favorite without a doubt). The production is solid; just enough to grab your attention but not so much that it distracts you from Asher Roth’s lyrics. With that said, his lyrics are worth listening to if you are into story telling and lyrics that paint pictures (almost like a novel). Asher Roth’s lyrics are simply good… you won’t be confused, he won’t lose you, and you won’t find yourself rewinding the track in disbelief. Asleep in the Bread Aisle is one to ride out to or just chill and play in the background to top of a relaxing day. He’ s not an actor… Asher Roth is official.
